DimensionU is a fantastic site/apps for Game Based Learning in the areas of Math and Literacy.  These innovative games take place in an interactive 3D world and are designed for grades 3rd-9th and aligned to Common Core Standard.  Also, these games are contained in an educational portal, safe to play, and help develop collaborative learning.

Answerables

Answerables is a wonderful new innovative site/game that is perfect for Game Based Learning (or more accurate Game Based Learning meets Learning Management System).  It reminds me of Second Life but geared more toward kids w/ their fantasy/SciFi environment.  The game takes place in the 3D virtual world of Answerables on a planet called Proxima, where the native Ansibles (students) encounter an alien race.

What makes this so great for education that is the safe/COPPA compliant environment that Answerables provides.  This is an ideal place for students to collaborate w/ others and develop their social learning skills.  Answerables provides windows (i.e. Second Life) to view the web, go on quests, etc.  The student dashboard allows students to track their quests, notifications, events, PODS (Personal Online Development Spaces), and more.

Educators can create a lesson/POD (manage permissions), create webquests, internet scave
nger hunts, host live events, and best of all "Gamify" their lesson.  This is great for introducing a new concept, guided/differentiated instruction, and even "Flipping" a classroom.  Also, teachers (parents too) can track/monitor student progress, share and view resources by collaborating w/ other educators, and even setup tutoring courses where they set their own rate.

Recycle Hero

Recycle Hero is one of the most played educational iOS apps that gets played in my house.  This is a super fun app filled w/ games that helps teach kids about recycling.  What make Recycle Hero so fun to play (and have high replay value) is all the cool features that one can unlock, such as worlds, characters, and more.  RH allows for a user to select from 10 Yogotars (the famous characters of Yogome), play through 36 levels, and unlock 6 different worlds, while sorting through trash, solving puzzles, etc.

RoomRecess

RoomRecess is one of my all time favorite sites for finding a wide variety of educational online games.  This is a great place for finding games in subjects such as: Math, Reading, Keyboarding, and more. These games are designed for students K-5 and are easy to play w/ high replay value.  Educators can find lots of useful free games that will help reinforce skills (i.e. Typing, Spelling, Basic Math Skills)

SuperMath Golf

SuperMath Golf is a fun little site that I just found out about from Technology & Learning.  All a student has to do is try to beat par or get a hole in one by estimating an angle and unit and click go.  Also, there are fun little obstacles to try to avoid such as sand traps, water, and trees.

Smart Kit is a nice site for finding safe educational games and puzzles.  These games focus on such subjects as: Math, Logic, Physics, and more.

Math Playground

Math Playground is an excellent site for students wanting to practice and strengthen their Math skills.  This is done through educational online games that focuses on different aspects of Math: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and more.  Also, these games are aligned to Common Core standards and there are a printables as well online flashcards too.

RoomRecess

RoomRecess is a wonderful free site for educational online games for Elementary students.  These games are simple to use and focus on a lot of different skills in the area of Math and Language Arts.  Some of the different skills covered in RR are: irregular verbs, parts of speech, multiplication, and more.

Futaba Classroom Games for Kids

Futaba Classroom Games for Kids is an excellent iPad app for teachers and students.  This app interacts seamlessly w/ a the Futaba website where teachers can create an account and then create games that can be shared w/ student iPads via a code.  These games cover a wide range a subjects such as Math, History, Reading, etc. and can contain images, video, audio, etc.  Best of all, this is one of the very few iPad apps I've seen that is multi-player and allows up to 4 students to play at once on one iPad.  This is a great way to engage students, integrate technology, and flip one's classroom.

Grid Lines: Ordered Pair Game

Grid Lines: Ordered Pair Game is the latest educational iOS Math game by Math File Folder Games.  Anyone familiar w/ these games will realize how simple it is to use and how easy it is to integrate into a curriculum.

Grid Lines focuses on plotting points on a grid.  This works similar to the board game Battleship but instead of trying to sink/hit ships a person is trying to plot points to draw a line through a shape.  The way this works is by rolling dice (similar to other MFFG games) and then using the numbers to plot two points on a gird.  Once the points are plotted a line is then drawn w/ the goal of trying to hit 1 or more shapes.

Best of all, this game is interactive and can be played by students across two different mobile devices using bluetooth to sync up.  Also, progress reports can be sent to parents or teachers via email.

Digital Raiders

Digital Raiders is a company that has a variety of online, Google Play, and iOS games that are ideal for education.  Two of those being Math Apocalypse and Space Words Defense.

Math Apocalypse - is a nice game where a person tries to answer the math questions before the aliens reach your base.

Space Words Defense - is a fun typing game where you can select your level and try to type in words to stop aliens before they hit the bottom of the screen (think Missle Command or Space Invaders).

With the start of school right around the corner, I decided to revisit a post I've done on sites for educational games.  This list I've compiled has a nice mix of subjects and grade levels that teachers can use w/ their students.

PlayBrighter

PlayBrighter is a new educational site for online games that I just found out about.  It kind of reminds me of Magna High but doesn't just focus on Math.  A user starts out by creating a "Peeble" (avatar), then going on a variety of educational missions.  These missions focus on different subject areas such as: Geography, Economics, History, and more.  As a person completes a mission more and more of them become "unlocked" and they are able to purchase items/buildings.
